Google Maps: the obvious one, but the pro move is downloading offline maps for each city before you arrive, so navigation works even with spotty data. Its public transit directions are excellent in European cities.
CityMapper: Citymapper is supported in over 100 major metropolitan areas across the globe, including North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. It specializes in dense urban transit networks, offering multimodal routing that integrates public transport (trains, buses, metros), walking, cycling, and e-scooters. This is the number one app we used to figure out the best ways to travel from where were to where we wanted to go!
DB Navigator: This is a great app for scheduling train tickets in Germany. You can use it to book tickets, check live schedules, and find routes for intercity (ICE) trains, regional trains, S-Bahns, U-Bahns, trams, and city buses.
Trenitalia: The Trenitalia app is designed exclusively for travel on the Italian national railway network. You can use it nationwide in Italy to book high-speed trains (e.g., Frecciarossa), regional trains, check real-time schedules, track train platforms, and manage digital tickets. When you book a train in Italy with a digital ticket, it does not have to be "validated". If you have a physical ticket, it does have to be validated or you can be fined.
Omio: Another great train ticket app. The Omio app can be used in over 47 countries across Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. It allows you to search, compare, and book trains, buses, flights, and ferries through a single platform. They do charge a minor fee for using them, so if you're at a train station, it is is more cost effective option to use the kiosks.
AppTaxi: is primarily used throughout Italy, offering coverage in over 65 cities, including major hubs like Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice, Naples, and Bologna.
Freenow: Freenow operates in over 150 cities across 9 European countries: Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the UK. In Italy specifically, the app is active in major locations including Rome, Milan, Turin, Naples, Catania, Palermo, and Cagliari. Services vary by city but generally include traditional taxis, e-scooters, e-bikes, and carsharing.
Bolt: The Bolt app operates in over 600 cities across 50 countries, primarily throughout Europe, Africa, and Latin America. Its services—which include ride-hailing (like standard taxis and premium cars), electric scooter/e-bike rentals, car-sharing (Bolt Drive), and food delivery—vary depending on the specific location.
Headout: The Headout app operates in over 100 major travel destinations globally, including major tourism hubs like New York, Paris, London, Rome, and Dubai. You can use it to book local tours, attraction tickets, events, and activities directly from your smartphone.
Easypark: EasyPark operates in over 3,700 cities across 25+ countries, including extensive coverage across Europe. In Italy specifically, it works in over 800 cities, covering major hubs like Sicily, Rome, Milan, Naples, and Turin, as well as garages, street parking, and airports. Other heavily supported regions include Spain, France, Germany, and the Nordic countries. Because exact street coverage and parking garages vary by municipality, the easiest way to verify if EasyPark is available at your exact destination is to use the interactive map and search bar within the EasyPark App.
Ferryhopper: The Ferryhopper App is used to search, compare, and book ferry tickets across Europe and beyond. It covers over 500 destinations and 160 ferry companies in countries including Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, and Croatia. It is highly useful for planning multi-stop island-hopping trips.
